Does anyone know what the title of the play "For Whom The Southern Belle Tolls" mean?

First you have to had read the play

Second what is the title refering to in the play?

and the author is Christopher Durang

Thanks :)Does anyone know what the title of the play "For Whom The Southern Belle Tolls" mean?It is a skit on the quotation - "Send not for whom the bell tolls - it tolls for thee" an extract from the metaphysical poet John Donne's poem "No man is an Island". It is almost a cliche in itself having been used by various authors - notably Ernest Hemingway,

Durang, though, is sending up the work of Tenesse Williams - most of his work being set in the deep south - his most famous creation is the archetypal ditzy Southern Belle, Blanche Dubois (who has always depended on the kindness of stangers). But In this he is parodying Amanda from the Glass Menagerie - with its subtext about prostitution - although he has Tom picking up sailors, as I recall.

Hard to explain you either get it or you don't - if you don't it is probably because you have not seen (or understood) the Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar named Desire or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - any of the tragic, opressive plays which feature dysfunctional characters disintegrating before our eyes.
